NUCLIO and the OTTERS project were present at the first edition of the Oeiras Valley Science Festival, which took place at Taguspark from May 21 to 25, 2025.
The event, whose central theme was Artificial Intelligence, was open to schools between May 21 and 23 and to the general public over the weekend (May 24 and 25), allowing everyone to explore science in a fun and creative way, while simultaneously awakening critical thinking.
In addition to lectures and discussion sessions, the event featured an interactive exhibition space where partners were able to offer visitors a variety of activities.
During the first three days, the NUCLIO stand welcomed several schools from the region, with a total of 640 students attending, from preschool to high school, who were able to carry out activities about the Solar System, try out our painting robots (Change Makers), as well as learn about meteorites and micrometeorites (with the StAnD project), about sonification (with the SoundScapes project), or about earthquakes and seismometers (with the Geo-Academy project), among many other activities.
Over the weekend, our stand was transformed into a vibrant showcase of NUCLIO’s diverse projects, featuring engaging activities for the general public, which all our visitors had the chance to experience.
On Saturday, the 24th, we also had the pleasure of welcoming the Mayor of Oeiras, Isaltino Morais, and the Councillor for Education, Pedro Patacho. NUCLIO’s participation in the Oeiras Valley Science Festival was also featured on some television channels! It was amazing to see our work recognized and shared with even more people.

In addition to being present at the exhibition space, during these days, NUCLIO also organized two events as part of the OTTERS project: the OTTERS Spring School and the conference “Waves of Change: Changing Hearts and Minds through Citizen Science”.
The Spring School took place from May 22 to 25, bringing together around 25 participants from five different countries. Throughout the week, they deepened their knowledge and skills in Citizen Science through immersive workshops and hands-on sessions led by renowned institutions in the field.

On May 23 and 24, the conference Waves of Change brought together more than 120 participants at the Oeiras Campus of the Instituto Superior Técnico to talk about aquatic ecosystems, citizen science, education and civic engagement. Over the course of two days, oral presentations, workshops, posters, and stands created a dynamic environment where researchers, technicians, educators, students, and citizens shared best practices and promoted citizen science.

On behalf of NUCLIO and the OTTERS project, we would like to thank the Oeiras Valley Science Festival and the Oeiras Campus of the Instituto Superior Técnico for this fantastic opportunity. We also extend our thanks to all our other partners involved in organizing this event, as well as to everyone who took part in the Spring School and the Conference. Last but not least, a big thank you to everyone who visited our stand!
