The international program Dark Skies Rangers, coordinated in Portugal by NUCLIO, aims to fight the problem of light pollution, by raising awareness among the educational community and local authorities to change the lighting systems in order to preserve the night sky.
Light pollution is caused by inappropriate outdoor luminaires, that send light up to the sky or sidewards, making the night sky brighter, wasting energy and money, contributing to climate change, compromising health, disrupting ecosystems, and making it much harder to carry out astronomical observations.
The objective of this project is to alert local communities to this problem through work carried out by students.
